Lesson 11: Crawlers
Overview
The Crawlers curriculum is designed for some of the youngest children in your ministry – typically around six months old. At this stage, babies are beginning to form early impressions of the world around them, including church. It is important to provide a joyful, safe, welcoming introduction to the church family and God’s Word. The Crawlers curriculum provides this through repetition, sensory engagement, and affirming core biblical truths.
A Six-Month Curriculum
Unlike the Runners, Preschool, and Elementary curricula, the Crawlers curriculum has its own Scope & Sequence. Six lessons (plus two additional holiday lessons) are provided. Each lesson is repeated every week for one month of the year and then again for another month later in the year. This repetition is intentional. Babies learn through routine and repeated experiences.
Topical Lessons
The Crawlers curriculum includes eight topical lessons, focusing on the most basic truths about who God is and what He has made. These topics lay the earliest foundation for a biblical worldview.
Here are the eight lessons:
- God made water and fish! (January/July)
- God made me! (February/August)
- God made food! (March/September)
- God made music! (April/October)
- God made animals! (May/November)
- God made babies! (June/December)
- Special Christmas lesson
- Special Easter lesson
Each lesson is designed on a half-sheet of paper (4.25” x 5.5”), making it convenient to store, display, or carry around in the classroom.
Each lesson includes:
- Simple supply recommendations – such as props or items that babies can safely hold, look at, or touch.
- A worship song suggestion – because music is an amazing way to teach God’s truth
- A brief lesson outline – giving volunteers a few sentences to say, instructions on how to incorporate the props, and interactive actions to use with the children.
What Makes the Crawlers Curriculum Special
Although the lessons are simple, the impact of the curriculum is significant. In the Crawlers classroom, children will:
- Experience the faithful love and care of godly adults
- Begin to associate church (and the church family) with joy and safety
- Hear God’s name and His Word spoken about with delight and respect
- Form the earliest building blocks of a biblical worldview
